What Makes MK-4 Different?

Vitamin K2 is a family of compounds called menaquinones, named MK-4 to MK-13 according to the length of their side chain. MK-4 is unusual because the body can make it from vitamin K1 in tissues such as the brain, pancreas, arteries and bones. It is found in animal foods such as egg yolks, butter, chicken and some cheeses. MK-7, in contrast, is made by bacteria and found mainly in natto.

Formulation Notes

Supplement doses of MK-4 vary widely, from around 100 mcg to several milligrams per day in nutritional products. High pharmaceutical doses such as 45 mg are used only under medical supervision. MK-4 is sensitive to light and some minerals, so we use stabilised powders, opaque coatings and suitable packaging, and test content uniformity for every batch.

Safety Notes

People taking warfarin or other vitamin K antagonist blood thinners must not use vitamin K2 supplements without their doctor's supervision, as vitamin K can reduce the effect of these medicines.
