Black Cumin Seeds, from the plant Nigella sativa, are the small, jet-black seeds known in India as Kalonji. They are used as a spice in breads, pickles and curries, and they are the raw material for black seed oil, which has a long history in Middle Eastern and South Asian traditions.
Arizone International supplies Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa) Seeds to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Nigella sativa is an annual flowering plant with pale blue flowers, grown in India, the Middle East and North Africa. In India it is cultivated mainly in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and West Bengal. Each seed pod holds many tiny, angular black seeds with a slightly bitter, peppery and onion-like taste.
Despite the name black cumin, Nigella sativa is not related to cumin (Cuminum cyminum). The seeds contain about 30% to 40% oil, and their best-known compound is thymoquinone. They are sold for culinary use, for oil pressing and as a raw material for powders and extracts.
After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Nigella seeds are a common food spice; in larger medicinal amounts they may affect blood sugar and blood pressure, so supplement products should advise people taking medication to consult their doctor.
For oil pressing, ask for oil content and thymoquinone on the certificate of analysis; for spice use, focus on purity, colour and foreign seed content.
Nigella seeds can be confused with black onion seeds or black sesame in some markets, so use the botanical name on contracts.
