Cornflower Petals
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Cornflower Petals are the dried, vivid blue petals of Centaurea cyanus, a wildflower once common in European grain fields. Their intense colour makes them one of the most eye-catching botanicals in herbal teas, cosmetics, soaps, food decoration and potpourri.
Arizone International supplies dried Cornflower Petals in bulk for tea blenders, cosmetic and soap makers, food decorators, potpourri producers, wholesalers and exporters.
The Flower of the Fields
Cornflower gets its English name from the wheat and barley fields ("corn" in old English usage) where it used to grow as a weed. It is also called bachelor's button, because young men in some European traditions wore the flower in their buttonholes. Cornflower is the national flower of Estonia and has long been a symbol in Germany. Modern farming has made the wild flower rarer, so most petals today come from cultivated fields, mainly in Europe.
The blue colour is unusual in nature. It comes from a complex anthocyanin pigment in which several anthocyanin and flavone molecules are held together with metal ions. This structure gives the petals their bright, stable cornflower blue.

A Traditional Eye Herb
In French folk tradition, cornflower was nicknamed "casse-lunettes", meaning "glasses-breaker", because a cornflower water compress was believed to refresh tired eyes so well that glasses would no longer be needed. Cornflower floral water is still used in eye-care cosmetics for its gentle, soothing image.
Keeping the Colour Bright
Cornflower petals fade quickly when exposed to light, heat and humidity, turning dull grey-blue. For the best colour, store the petals in opaque, airtight packaging in a cool, dry place and use them within the recommended shelf life. In tea blends, cornflower is mainly used for appearance, as it has a very mild taste.
Quality Parameters
- Colour intensity and uniformity
- Share of petals versus green parts and stems
- Moisture and foreign matter
- Microbiology, pesticide residues and heavy metals
- Pyrrolizidine alkaloid testing where required by export markets
Packaging
Petals are light and delicate, so they are packed in cartons with food-grade inner liners, protected from crushing and light.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Keep cornflower petals away from light and moisture to protect their bright blue colour. In tea blends, they are used mainly for colour, so a small amount goes a long way.
