Corn Silk
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Corn Silk is the dried bundle of fine, hair-like threads found under the husk of a maize cob. Each thread is the stigma of a female flower, and in herbal traditions from Native America to China and Korea, these soft golden threads have been dried and brewed as a gentle herbal tea.
Arizone International supplies dried whole and cut Corn Silk in bulk for herbal tea brands, extract manufacturers, herbal product companies, wholesalers and exporters. Corn Silk Extract is available separately.
From Cob to Herb
Maize (Zea mays) is one of the most widely grown crops on the planet, and India is a major producer, with large areas in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar and Telangana. Corn silk is collected from the young cobs, ideally around the time of pollination while the threads are still fresh, light green to golden and soft. Older silk turns dark brown and dry, and is of lower quality for herbal use.
Because silk is harvested together with the cobs, it is a by-product of sweet corn and maize production. It is cleaned of husk pieces and plant debris, then dried quickly at low temperature to keep its colour and aroma.
Traditional Use
Corn silk tea has long been used in folk practice as a mild diuretic and for urinary comfort. In Korea, roasted corn silk tea, called oksusu suyeom cha, is a popular caffeine-free everyday drink, often mixed with roasted corn kernels. In traditional Chinese medicine, corn silk is known as Yu Mi Xu.

Packaging and Storage
Corn silk is light and bulky, so it is packed in pressed bales or large poly-lined bags. Store dry and away from light.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Corn silk should be golden to light brown and free of husk and dust. For teas, choose cut dried silk; for capsules and drinks, use corn silk extract for a stronger, more consistent dose.
