Alfalfa Seeds are the small, kidney-shaped, golden-brown seeds of Medicago sativa. They are used for three main purposes: sowing alfalfa as a fodder crop, sprouting into fresh alfalfa sprouts for salads and sandwiches, and as a raw material for herbal and nutrition products.

Arizone International supplies cleaned Alfalfa Seeds in bulk for seed traders, sprouting companies, health food brands, herbal manufacturers and exporters, with specifications set to the intended use.

About Alfalfa Seeds

Alfalfa, also called lucerne, is a perennial legume that can be cut many times a year and is one of the world's most important fodder crops. In India, it is grown mainly in the drier north-western states, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, where it provides nutritious green feed for dairy animals. The seeds are harvested from mature plants, threshed, cleaned and graded.

Each seed is only about 2 mm long, so a kilogram contains hundreds of thousands of seeds. Good seed lots are uniform in size and colour, with a bright, clean appearance.

Main Uses

  • Sowing and Fodder ProductionSeed for farmers growing alfalfa as green fodder, hay or silage. Germination rate and purity are the key quality measures.
  • Sprouting SeedsAlfalfa sprouts are one of the most popular sprouts worldwide, with a mild, nutty taste and crunchy texture.
  • Herbal and Nutrition ProductsSeeds and sprouts are used in some herbal preparations and nutrition blends.
  • Bird Feed and Animal NutritionUsed in some seed mixes.

A Note on Sprouting Safety

Sprouts are grown in warm, moist conditions that can also allow bacteria to multiply. Outbreaks of Salmonella and E. coli linked to raw sprouts have occurred in several countries, and food safety authorities in the US, EU and elsewhere have special rules for sprouting seeds. Seeds intended for sprouting should come from lots that are tested for pathogens, and sprouting companies usually disinfect seeds before use. Buyers should tell us clearly if seeds are for sprouting so we can apply the right specification and testing.

Quality Parameters

  • Physical purity and freedom from weed seeds
  • Germination percentage for sowing and sprouting grades
  • Moisture content
  • Seed size, colour and uniformity
  • Microbiology (Salmonella, E. coli) for sprouting grades
  • Pesticide residues and seed treatment status (treated seed is not for food)

Safety Notes for Food Use

Raw alfalfa seeds and sprouts contain L-canavanine, an amino acid that has been linked with flare-ups in people with lupus and other autoimmune conditions. Sprouts are generally not recommended for pregnant women, young children, older adults and people with weak immunity because of the risk of foodborne illness.
