Acacia Concinna
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Acacia Concinna, known in India as Shikakai, is a climbing shrub whose dried pods have been used for generations as a natural hair cleanser. The brown, wrinkled pods contain natural saponins that produce a mild lather in water. Arizone International supplies dried Shikakai pods, whole or cut, for hair care brands, Ayurvedic manufacturers, soap makers and exporters.
The name "shikakai" is often translated as "fruit for hair", and it remains one of the best-known ingredients in traditional Indian hair care.
About Acacia Concinna
Acacia concinna (also classified as Senegalia rugata) is a thorny climbing shrub that grows in the warm plains and forests of central and southern India, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as in Southeast Asia. Its flat pods ripen in winter and are collected by hand, dried in the sun and then cleaned. The pods can be supplied whole, cut into pieces, or ground into Shikakai powder.
How Shikakai Is Used
Traditionally, dried Shikakai pods are soaked or boiled in water, often together with reetha (soapnut) and amla, and the liquid is used to wash the hair. The mild, low-foam lather cleans without stripping the hair of its natural oils as strongly as harsh detergents can. Today, Shikakai is also used as an ingredient in herbal shampoos, hair powders and natural soaps.
Key Compounds
- SaponinsNatural foaming compounds that give Shikakai its gentle cleansing action.

- Saponin content, where specified
- Microbiological limits for cosmetic use
Packaging and Storage
Shikakai pods are packed in 25 to 50 kg PP or jute bags with a liner, and cut pieces or powder in smaller bags on request. Store them in a cool, dry place away from moisture and pests.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For herbal shampoos, soak or boil the dried pods and use the strained liquid, or mill them to fine powder for hair-wash powders. Shikakai works best with reetha for more lather and amla for extra conditioning.
Store the pods dry and away from humidity, because damp pods can grow mould. For cosmetic use, ask for microbiology results on the powder, and consider steam-sterilised material for export.
