Sidr Powder is made from the dried leaves of the sidr tree, Ziziphus spina-christi, a hardy thorny tree of the Middle East and North Africa. In Arab countries, sidr leaf powder has been used for centuries as a natural shampoo and body wash, and it holds special importance in Islamic tradition. The tree is also famous for the sought-after sidr honey made by bees that feed on its flowers.

Arizone International supplies Sidr Leaf Powder for natural hair-care and cosmetic brands, Middle Eastern markets, herbal companies, wholesalers and exporters.

About the Sidr Tree

Ziziphus spina-christi, also called Christ's thorn jujube or lote tree, grows in dry regions of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen, Iraq, Egypt, Sudan and nearby countries. It is a deep-rooted, drought-tolerant evergreen with small, shiny leaves, sharp thorns and small yellow fruits called nabq, which are eaten fresh or dried. Its name appears in religious texts, and the lote tree is mentioned in the Quran. In India, a related tree, Ziziphus mauritiana (ber), is common.

Traditional Uses

  • Hair WashSidr leaf powder mixed with water forms a gentle, lathering paste that is used to cleanse hair and scalp, leaving hair soft.
  • Body CleansingUsed as a natural body wash and in traditional bathing.
  • Religious PracticeIn Islamic tradition, water with sidr leaves is used for the ritual washing (ghusl) of the deceased, following prophetic tradition.
  • Skin CareUsed in traditional masks and for soothing the skin.

What Sidr Leaves Contain

Sidr leaves contain saponins, which produce a natural lather, as well as flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes and mucilage. These give the powder its cleansing and conditioning properties.

Applications

  • Natural shampoo powders and herbal hair washes
  • Hair masks, often mixed with henna, rose water or oils
  • Body washes, soaps and face masks
  • Products for Middle Eastern and Islamic markets, including ghusl products
  • Natural and halal-positioned cosmetics

How to Use

For hair, sidr powder is mixed with warm water, sometimes with a little oil or yoghurt, to form a smooth, frothy paste. It is applied to wet hair and scalp, left for a few minutes and rinsed thoroughly. It can also be mixed with henna for a combined colouring and conditioning treatment.

Safety Notes

Sidr powder is for external use in cosmetic applications. Avoid contact with eyes, and do a patch test before first use on the skin.
