Aritha Whole
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Aritha Whole refers to whole dried soapnuts, the fruits of the Sapindus tree, known in India as reetha. These wrinkled, golden-brown berries contain natural saponins that foam in water, and they have become a popular zero-waste laundry and cleaning product in Europe, North America and around the world, while remaining a traditional hair and fabric wash in India.
Arizone International supplies Aritha Whole, with seeds or deseeded, in bulk for eco-friendly laundry brands, natural personal-care companies, retailers, wholesalers and exporters.
Soapnuts as an Eco Laundry Product
Soapnuts are one of the simplest natural cleaning products in the world. A handful of shells placed in a small cotton bag and tossed into the washing machine releases saponins that clean clothes gently. The same shells can often be reused for several washes before they turn soft and grey, after which they can be composted. This makes soapnuts popular with people looking to reduce plastic packaging and synthetic detergents.
Types and Grades
- Whole Soapnuts With SeedThe traditional, economical form.
- Deseeded Soapnut ShellsSeeds removed, lighter and more effective per gram. This is the preferred grade for export laundry products.
- Graded by Size and ColourLarger, golden, clean shells command a premium.
- SpeciesSapindus mukorossi from the northern Himalayan foothills and Nepal, or Sapindus trifoliatus from South India.
Applications
- Eco-friendly laundry soapnuts in retail pouches
- Homemade liquid soap and all-purpose cleaners
- Traditional hair wash, often with shikakai and amla
- Jewellery and silver cleaning
- Washing silk, wool and delicate fabrics
- Raw material for aritha powder and soapnut extract
How to Use Soapnuts
For laundry, around four to six half-shells are placed in a cloth bag and added to the drum. For hot washes, fewer shells are needed because saponins release faster in warm water. For liquid soap, shells are boiled in water for 20 to 30 minutes and the liquid is strained and cooled. Soapnut liquid should be refrigerated or preserved, as it is natural and can spoil.
Safety Notes
Soapnuts are for external use only and should be kept away from children, as they are not edible. Soapnut liquid stings the eyes, so avoid eye contact. People with very sensitive skin should do a patch test.
Quality Parameters
- Species and origin
- Deseeded percentage and freedom from seeds and stems
- Shell size, colour and stickiness (fresh shells are slightly sticky)
- Moisture and freedom from mould and insects
- Foaming ability
Packaging and Storage
Aritha Whole is packed in jute or PP bags, typically 25 kg to 40 kg, or in retail cotton bags and pouches for private label. Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from humidity.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for deseeded aritha if you want the shells only, as the seeds add weight but no lather.
