Shikakai Powder is made from the dried pods of Acacia concinna (Senegalia rugata), a thorny climbing shrub of the Indian forests. Its name is often translated as "fruit for hair", and for generations Indian families have washed their hair with shikakai, often together with reetha and amla, long before modern shampoos existed.
Arizone International supplies Shikakai Powder and whole shikakai pods for herbal shampoo and hair-care brands, Ayurvedic companies, natural cosmetic makers, wholesalers and exporters.
India's Traditional Hair Wash
Acacia concinna grows in the warm forests of central and southern India, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Its brown, wrinkled pods are collected, dried and ground into a fine brown powder. Mixed with water, the powder produces a mild lather and has a slightly tangy, earthy smell.
In many South Indian homes, a paste of shikakai, reetha and amla, sometimes with hibiscus leaves and fenugreek, was prepared every week for the traditional oil bath and hair wash. This practice is still popular among people who prefer natural hair care.
Why Shikakai Works
- Natural SaponinsShikakai pods contain saponins that create a gentle lather and lift away dirt and excess oil.
- Mildly AcidicIts low pH is gentler on the hair and scalp than many alkaline soaps.
- Leaves Natural OilsCleanses without stripping hair as harshly as some detergents, helping hair stay soft.
- Traditional Scalp CareUsed traditionally to keep the scalp clean and reduce flakes.
How to Use
For a simple hair wash, shikakai powder is mixed with warm water to form a smooth paste and massaged into wet hair and scalp, then rinsed thoroughly. Many people combine it with reetha powder for more lather and amla powder for conditioning. The powder can also be soaked and boiled to make a liquid shampoo base.
