Sarsaparilla Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Sarsaparilla Powder is made from the dried roots of Smilax species, woody climbing vines from Central and South America, the Caribbean and Mexico. Sarsaparilla was once famous in Europe as a "blood purifier" herb and gave its name to a classic American soft drink. Today it is used in herbal teas, supplements and natural drink flavours.
Arizone International supplies Sarsaparilla Root Powder and cut root for herbal tea brands, beverage and flavour companies, supplement makers, wholesalers and exporters.
About Sarsaparilla
Several Smilax species are traded as sarsaparilla, including Smilax ornata (Jamaican sarsaparilla), Smilax officinalis and Smilax regelii (Honduran sarsaparilla), and Smilax aristolochiifolia (Mexican sarsaparilla). They are thorny vines that climb through tropical forests, and their long, thin roots are harvested, dried and cut or powdered. The name comes from the Spanish "zarza", meaning bramble, and "parrilla", meaning little vine.
Sarsaparilla reached Europe in the sixteenth century and became a popular remedy for skin diseases, rheumatism and as a general tonic. In nineteenth-century America, sarsaparilla drinks were sold as health tonics, and the name became linked with root beer-style soft drinks, though modern versions are often flavoured with other ingredients.
Not to Be Confused With Indian Sarsaparilla
In India, the name "Indian sarsaparilla" refers to Hemidesmus indicus (Anantmool or nannari), a completely different plant. We supply both; please specify the botanical name you need.
What Sarsaparilla Contains
- Steroidal SaponinsSuch as sarsasaponin (parillin), which yields sarsasapogenin, and smilagenin.
- PhytosterolsIncluding beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol.
- Flavonoids and Phenolic AcidsPresent in smaller amounts.
- Starch and ResinMaking up the rest of the root.
Applications
- Herbal teas and traditional "blood purifier" blends
- Natural flavouring for root beer-style and craft sodas
- Skin wellness and detox supplements
- Men's wellness blends (a popular traditional use)
- Herbal tinctures and extracts
Scientific evidence for many traditional sarsaparilla uses is limited, so claims should be modest. Its saponins are sometimes marketed as "natural testosterone", but the body cannot convert them into hormones, and such claims should be avoided.
Safety Notes
Sarsaparilla is generally well tolerated in normal amounts, but large amounts may cause stomach irritation. It may affect the absorption of some medicines. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with kidney problems should seek advice before use.
