Sarpagandha Powder is made from the dried roots of Rauvolfia serpentina, known in English as Indian snakeroot. It is one of the most historically important plants in Indian medicine: its roots were used in Ayurveda for calming the mind and for high blood pressure, and the alkaloid reserpine, first isolated from this plant in the 1950s, became one of the early modern medicines for hypertension.

Arizone International supplies Sarpagandha Root Powder to licensed Ayurvedic and pharmaceutical manufacturers, in line with applicable regulations and documentation requirements.

About Sarpagandha

Rauvolfia serpentina is a small, evergreen shrub with glossy leaves, white-pink flowers and small purple-black berries. It grows in the moist forests of the Himalayan foothills, the Western and Eastern Ghats and north-eastern India. The name Sarpagandha refers to snakes, and the root was traditionally used in folk medicine for snake and insect bites. In Ayurveda, it is described as a herb for insomnia, anxiety, agitation and high blood pressure.

In the twentieth century, Indian and Western scientists studied the plant extensively. Reserpine was isolated in 1952 and was widely used around the world as a blood pressure medicine and tranquilliser. This made Sarpagandha a famous example of a traditional herb leading to a modern drug.

Important Safety and Regulatory Notes

Sarpagandha is a potent herb. Its alkaloids can lower blood pressure, slow the heart rate and cause drowsiness, nasal congestion, depression and other side effects. It must only be used under the supervision of a qualified doctor or Ayurvedic practitioner, and never combined with other blood pressure or psychiatric medicines without medical advice. It is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for people with depression, peptic ulcers or certain heart conditions.

Rauvolfia serpentina is listed in CITES Appendix II, and wild populations are threatened. Export requires appropriate permits, and many countries restrict or prohibit reserpine-containing herbs in food supplements. We supply only to licensed buyers with the correct documentation.
