Sandalwood Powder is made from the fragrant heartwood of white sandalwood, Santalum album, known in India as chandan. With its creamy, sweet, woody fragrance and soothing, cooling feel on the skin, sandalwood is one of the most treasured natural materials in India, used for centuries in worship, skincare, incense and perfumery.

Arizone International supplies Sandalwood Powder from legally sourced material for cosmetic and skincare brands, incense and pooja product makers, Ayurvedic companies and perfumers, with the documentation required for trade and export.

A Precious, Slow-Growing Tree

Santalum album is a small evergreen tree that is partly parasitic, drawing some of its nutrients from the roots of neighbouring plants. The fragrant heartwood forms slowly, and trees usually need many years, often a few decades, to develop valuable heartwood. Mysore sandalwood from Karnataka is historically the most famous, and Marayur sandalwood from Kerala has a Geographical Indication tag. Overharvesting and smuggling reduced wild stocks, so sandalwood trade in India is regulated, and plantation-grown sandalwood, as well as Australian sandalwood, is becoming more important.

The Fragrance of Sandalwood

The heartwood contains an essential oil rich in alpha-santalol and beta-santalol, which give sandalwood its long-lasting, warm, milky scent. Good sandalwood powder smells rich and sweet; weak or synthetic-smelling powder may be adulterated with other woods or fragrance. Only heartwood gives the true scent; the outer sapwood has little aroma.

Traditional Uses

  • WorshipSandalwood paste (chandan) is applied as tilak and offered to deities in temples and homes.
  • SkincareIn Ayurveda, chandan is described as cooling and soothing. Sandalwood face packs with rose water or turmeric are a classic Indian beauty ritual, especially for summer and weddings.
  • FragranceSandalwood is the base of traditional Indian attars and incense sticks.

Applications

  • Face packs, ubtan and skin-brightening masks
  • Soaps, creams, lotions and body powders
  • Incense sticks, dhoop and havan samagri
  • Pooja chandan and tilak products
  • Natural perfumes and attars
  • Ayurvedic external preparations

Legal Sourcing

Sandalwood is subject to forest and trade regulations in India, and exports of sandalwood products may require specific documentation. We supply only legally sourced material with appropriate paperwork and advise buyers on current rules for their market.

Quality Parameters

  • Species identity (Santalum album or specified species)
  • Heartwood content and santalol level where specified
  • Aroma, colour and fineness
  • Screening for adulteration with other woods or added fragrance
  • Moisture, microbiology and heavy metals

Packaging and Storage

Sandalwood Powder is packed in airtight containers to preserve fragrance. Store in a cool, dry place away from strong odours.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Sandalwood is a protected and costly wood, so ask for legal sourcing documents and identity testing, as cheaper woods are sometimes sold in its place. The powder is used in face packs, incense and cosmetics, and it keeps its aroma best in sealed packs.
