Safed Musli Powder is made from the dried, peeled tuberous roots of Chlorophytum borivilianum, a small herb that grows in the forests of India during the monsoon. Its white roots are so valued in Ayurveda and Unani medicine, especially in tonics for vitality and strength, that the plant is sometimes called "white gold".

Arizone International supplies Safed Musli Powder and dried roots for Ayurvedic and Unani manufacturers, men's and women's wellness brands, nutraceutical companies, wholesalers and exporters.

About Safed Musli

Chlorophytum borivilianum is a lily-like herb with long, narrow leaves and small white star-shaped flowers. It grows naturally in the deciduous forests of central and western India, and it appears above ground only in the rainy season. Below ground, it forms a cluster of thick, finger-like, fleshy tuberous roots. After harvesting, the roots are washed, peeled and dried until they turn creamy white and hard, then ground into powder.

Because wild populations were heavily collected, safed musli is now widely cultivated, especially in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, making it an important medicinal crop for farmers.

Safed Musli in Ayurveda and Unani

  • Vitality and StaminaTraditionally classed as a Vajikarana (vitality) and Rasayana (rejuvenating) herb.
  • Men's WellnessA common ingredient in traditional tonics for male vitality, often with ashwagandha, kaunch and shatavari.
  • Women's Wellness and Postnatal CareUsed in some traditional preparations, including nourishing laddoos given after childbirth.
  • General StrengthUsed as a nourishing tonic for weakness and fatigue.

What Safed Musli Contains

The roots are rich in carbohydrates and mucilage, and contain steroidal saponins, which are commonly used as quality markers, along with protein, alkaloids and minerals. Extracts are often standardised to saponin content.

Applications

  • Men's vitality supplements, capsules and tablets
  • Ayurvedic and Unani churnas and tonics
  • Energy and strength health drinks
  • Women's wellness and postnatal nutrition products
  • Raw material for safed musli extract
  • Private label wellness products

Scientific research on safed musli is still limited, so product claims should be modest and follow the rules of each market.

Quality Parameters

  • Chlorophytum borivilianum identity (other Chlorophytum species are substituted)
  • Colour (creamy white indicates good peeling and drying)
  • Saponin content where specified
  • Moisture and particle size
  • Microbiology, heavy metals and pesticide residues

Packaging and Storage

Safed Musli Powder is packed in moisture-proof bags. Store sealed in a cool, dry place, as the mucilage-rich powder can absorb moisture.

Safety Notes

Safed musli is generally well tolerated. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and people on regular medication should seek advice before using concentrated supplements.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Ask for identity testing on Safed Musli, as cheaper roots are sometimes sold in its place. Ask for saponin content if you need a standardised grade.

Keep it sealed and dry.
