Rhubarb Root Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Rhubarb Root Powder is made from the dried roots and rhizomes of medicinal rhubarb, mainly Rheum palmatum and Rheum officinale (Chinese rhubarb) and Rheum emodi (Indian or Himalayan rhubarb). Unlike garden rhubarb, whose sour stalks are used in pies, medicinal rhubarb root is a powerful traditional herb, best known as a laxative in Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Unani practice.
Arizone International supplies Rhubarb Root Powder for herbal and traditional medicine manufacturers, Unani and Ayurvedic companies, natural hair colour brands, wholesalers and exporters.
A Root With a Remarkable History
Chinese rhubarb root, called da huang, has been used in China for more than two thousand years. It was so valued in Europe that it was traded along the Silk Road at prices higher than cinnamon and opium, and European traders went to great lengths to obtain it. In India, Himalayan rhubarb (Rheum emodi, also called Rheum australe) grows at high altitudes in the Himalayas and is known in Unani medicine as revand chini.
What Rhubarb Root Contains
- AnthraquinonesSuch as emodin, rhein, aloe-emodin and chrysophanol, and their glycosides (sennosides), which are responsible for the laxative effect.
- TanninsWhich, in small doses, give an astringent effect.
- StilbenesIncluding rhaponticin.
- Yellow PigmentsGiving the powder its golden-yellow to orange colour.
A Two-Sided Herb
Rhubarb root is known for an interesting dual action. In larger doses, its anthraquinones act as a stimulant laxative. In very small doses, its tannins can have an astringent effect. This is why traditional systems use it carefully and in specific formulas.
Applications
- Traditional laxative and digestive formulas
- Unani and Ayurvedic preparations
- Chinese-style herbal formulas
- Natural hair colour and golden highlight treatments, a folk use for fair hair
- Natural yellow dyes
Important Safety Notes
Rhubarb root is a stimulant laxative and should only be used for short periods and at recommended doses. Long-term use can cause dependence and electrolyte imbalance. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, or for people with intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney stones or gout, as it contains oxalates. It may interact with diuretics, heart medicines and steroids. Rhubarb leaves are toxic and are never used.
