Red Sandalwood Powder, known in India as rakta chandan or lal chandan, is a deep red powder made from the heartwood of Pterocarpus santalinus. Unlike white sandalwood, it has almost no fragrance. It is prized instead for its rich red colour, which makes it a traditional ingredient in Indian face packs, religious tilak, natural dyes and Ayurvedic skin preparations.
Arizone International supplies Red Sandalwood Powder from legally sourced material for cosmetic and skincare brands, Ayurvedic companies, pooja product makers and natural dye users, in line with applicable regulations.
A Rare and Protected Tree
Pterocarpus santalinus, also called red sanders, grows naturally only in a small area of the Eastern Ghats in southern Andhra Pradesh, especially the Seshachalam hills, with small populations in neighbouring areas. Its dense, dark red heartwood is highly valued in East Asia for furniture and musical instruments, which led to heavy illegal logging and smuggling. As a result, red sanders is listed as endangered and is included in CITES Appendix II, and trade in its wood is strictly controlled by Indian law.
For buyers, this means that red sandalwood must come from legal, documented sources, such as authorised auctions of seized wood or permitted cultivated material. We supply only material with appropriate documentation and handle export in line with current Indian and international rules.
Red vs White Sandalwood
White sandalwood (Santalum album) is famous for its sweet, creamy fragrance and is used in perfumery. Red sandalwood comes from a completely different tree and is valued for colour, not scent. The two should not be confused in formulations or labelling.
