Red Kamala Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Red Kamala Powder is a fine, brick-red powder collected from the fruits of Mallotus philippensis, the kamala tree, known in India as sindoor tree, kampillaka or rohini. The powder is made of tiny red glands and hairs that cover the fruit, and it has been used in India for centuries as a natural orange-red dye and in traditional medicine.
Arizone International supplies Red Kamala Powder for natural dye users, Ayurvedic and Unani manufacturers, herbal companies, wholesalers and exporters.
How Kamala Powder Is Collected
Mallotus philippensis is a small evergreen tree found across India, from the Himalayan foothills to the south, and in Southeast Asia and Australia. Its round, three-lobed fruits are densely covered with a red, powdery coating. When the fruits ripen, they are collected and rubbed or shaken in baskets or cloth so that the red powder falls off. The powder is then sieved to remove debris. It feels light and slightly sticky and has almost no smell or taste.
A Traditional Natural Dye
Kamala has long been used in India and neighbouring countries to dye silk and wool in bright orange to flame-red shades, especially with an alkaline dye bath such as soda. It was once an important export dye. Its colour comes mainly from rottlerin and related phloroglucinol compounds, along with resin. The powder dissolves poorly in water but well in alkaline solutions, oils and alcohol.
Traditional Medicinal Use
In Ayurveda and traditional medicine, kamala (kampillaka) was used as a purgative and traditionally against intestinal worms, especially tapeworms. It is also used externally in some traditional skin preparations. Because it is strong, internal use has always been in small doses under the guidance of practitioners.
Applications
- Natural dyeing of silk, wool and cotton in orange-red shades
- Colour for natural soaps, oils and crafts
- Traditional Ayurvedic and Unani preparations
- Topical herbal skin preparations
- Research and specialty uses
Important Safety Notes
Kamala is a strong purgative, and internal use can cause severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting if not used correctly. It must never be used during pregnancy, for young children, or by people with digestive disorders. Internal use should only be under the supervision of a qualified practitioner and in line with local regulations. For dyeing and external uses, avoid inhaling the fine powder and wear gloves.
Quality Parameters
- Mallotus philippensis identity
- Colour intensity and fineness
- Foreign matter (fruit fragments, sand, added brick powder)
- Moisture and ash
- Heavy metals and microbiology
Because kamala is valuable, it is sometimes adulterated with brick dust, red earth or other red powders. Ash and acid-insoluble ash tests help detect this.
Packaging and Storage
Red Kamala Powder is packed in sealed bags or containers. Store in a cool, dry place, away from food and children.
