Pomegranate Peel Powder is made from the dried rind of pomegranate fruit, Punica granatum. The leathery peel that we usually throw away is actually the richest part of the fruit in polyphenols, especially tannins called punicalagins, and it has long been used in Ayurveda, Unani medicine, natural dyeing and skin care.
Arizone International supplies Pomegranate Peel Powder for Ayurvedic and herbal manufacturers, oral-care and skincare brands, natural dyers, extract producers, wholesalers and exporters.
The Most Valuable Part of the Fruit
India is the world's largest pomegranate producer, with Maharashtra, especially Solapur, Sangli and Nashik, growing most of the crop, followed by Gujarat, Karnataka and Rajasthan. Juice and aril processing leave behind large amounts of peel. When dried and milled, this peel becomes a reddish-brown, strongly astringent powder packed with plant compounds. Studies have shown that pomegranate peel contains far higher levels of polyphenols than the juicy arils.
What Pomegranate Peel Contains
- PunicalaginsLarge ellagitannins that are characteristic of pomegranate.
- Ellagic Acid and Gallic AcidKey phenolic acids and common quality markers.
- FlavonoidsIncluding quercetin, catechins and anthocyanidins.
- Pectin and FibreMaking up much of the peel.
Traditional Uses
In Ayurveda and Unani medicine, dadimatvak (pomegranate rind) is traditionally used for loose stools, as a gargle for sore throat and gum problems, and in tooth powders because of its astringent action. In many Indian homes, dried pomegranate peel powder is mixed with water or honey as a traditional remedy for mild diarrhoea. The peel has also been used for centuries to dye wool and cotton in shades of yellow, gold and khaki, and to tan leather.
