Plantain Leaf Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Plantain Leaf Powder is made from the dried leaves of Plantago species, mainly broadleaf plantain (Plantago major) and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata). This is not the banana-like plantain fruit. It is a common, low-growing "weed" found on lawns and paths across the world, and it has a long history in European and folk herbal traditions for skin care and cough relief.
Arizone International supplies Plantain Leaf Powder and cut leaves for herbal tea brands, cough syrup makers, natural skincare and balm producers, wholesalers and exporters.
Not the Banana Plantain
The word "plantain" causes confusion. Plantain bananas (Musa species) are starchy cooking bananas. Plantain leaf, in contrast, comes from Plantago, the same genus that gives us psyllium husk (Plantago ovata). Broadleaf plantain has wide, oval leaves with strong parallel veins, while ribwort plantain has long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Both grow almost everywhere people walk, which led some Native Americans to call broadleaf plantain "white man's footprint", as it spread wherever European settlers went.
Traditional Uses
- Skin CareFresh plantain leaves have long been crushed and applied to insect bites, stings, minor cuts and scrapes in folk tradition. Plantain-infused oils are used in balms and salves.
- Cough and ThroatRibwort plantain syrup is a traditional European remedy for dry cough and sore throat, and European herbal monographs recognise it for soothing the mouth and throat.
- Digestive ComfortUsed in some traditional tea blends.
What Plantain Leaf Contains
Plantain leaves contain mucilage, which gives a soothing, coating feel; iridoid glycosides such as aucubin and catalpol; phenylethanoid glycosides such as acteoside (verbascoside); allantoin, a well-known skin-soothing compound; flavonoids; and tannins.
Applications
- Herbal cough syrups, lozenges and throat teas
- Healing balms, salves and ointments
- Creams, lotions and after-bite products
- Herbal tea blends
- Infused oils for natural skincare
- Herbal supplements
Safety Notes
Plantain leaf is generally well tolerated. People allergic to plantain pollen may react. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should seek advice before using concentrated supplements. Because the leaves grow close to the ground, correct cleaning and testing are important.
Quality Parameters
- Plantago species identity (major or lanceolata)
- Colour, moisture and particle size
- Foreign matter and soil content
- Microbiology, heavy metals and pesticide residues
- Screening for adulteration with foxglove leaves, a known safety issue with wild-collected plantain
Packaging and Storage
Plantain Leaf Powder is packed in moisture-proof bags. Store in a cool, dry, dark place.
Plantain leaf is also used in natural pet care products, such as soothing balms for paws and skin.
It blends well with calendula and chamomile in skin products.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Specify Plantago major or P. lanceolata, and ask for identity testing. Plantain leaf is different from the banana-like plantain fruit.
Keep the powder sealed and dry, and tell us the mesh size you need for teas, capsules or skin care blends.
