Papaya Seed Powder is made from the dried black seeds of the papaya fruit, Carica papaya. Most people scoop out and throw away these seeds, but they have a sharp, peppery taste, a little like black pepper and mustard, and they have been used in folk traditions of Asia, Africa and Latin America for their distinctive flavour and traditional digestive uses.
Arizone International supplies Papaya Seed Powder and dried papaya seeds for spice and seasoning companies, herbal brands, food manufacturers, wholesalers and exporters.
From Fruit Waste to Spice
India is the world's largest producer of papaya, with major growing areas in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Papaya processing for juice, pulp, candy and papain enzyme produces large amounts of seeds. These are washed to remove the jelly-like coating, dried and ground into a dark brown, peppery powder. Using the seeds helps reduce waste from fruit processing.
Ground papaya seeds are sometimes used as a pepper substitute in salad dressings and marinades, and in some tropical countries they are eaten in small amounts after meals.
What Papaya Seeds Contain
- Benzyl IsothiocyanateThe main compound behind the sharp, peppery bite.
- CarpaineAn alkaloid found in papaya seeds and leaves.
- Healthy Fats and ProteinThe seeds are rich in oil, mainly oleic acid, and protein.
- Fibre and PolyphenolsPresent in varying amounts.
- PapainTraces of the enzyme found in papaya.
Traditional Uses
In folk practice in parts of Asia and Latin America, dried papaya seeds have been taken in small amounts to support digestion and traditionally against intestinal parasites. Scientific evidence is limited, so products should make only modest, compliant claims.
