Nopal Powder is made from the dried pads (cladodes) of the prickly pear cactus, Opuntia ficus-indica. In Mexico, fresh nopal pads, called nopales, are an everyday vegetable, and the dried, powdered form is used in supplements, smoothies and food products as a source of fibre and plant compounds.

Arizone International supplies Nopal Cactus Powder for supplement manufacturers, superfood and smoothie brands, food companies, cosmetic makers, wholesalers and exporters.

Mexico's Favourite Cactus

The prickly pear cactus is so important to Mexico that it appears on the national flag, where an eagle is shown perched on a nopal. The flat, paddle-shaped pads are harvested young, the spines are removed, and they are sliced and cooked into dishes such as ensalada de nopales, tacos and scrambled eggs. The sweet fruits, called tunas or cactus pears, are also eaten. Opuntia has spread to dry regions around the world, including the Mediterranean, Africa and parts of India, where it is sometimes grown as a hedge or fodder plant.

From Pad to Powder

For powder, young pads are cleaned, despined, sliced and dried at controlled temperatures, then milled into a fine, pale green powder. The powder has a mild, slightly tart, green taste.

What Nopal Contains

  • Dietary FibreIncluding soluble fibres such as pectin and mucilage, and insoluble fibre.
  • MineralsEspecially calcium, magnesium and potassium.
  • Polyphenols and FlavonoidsIncluding isorhamnetin and quercetin derivatives.
  • VitaminsSuch as vitamin C and carotenoids, in smaller amounts.

Traditional and Modern Uses

In Mexican folk practice, nopal is traditionally eaten to help manage blood sugar and support digestion. Some small studies have looked at nopal's effect on blood sugar after meals and on cholesterol, and its high fibre content is thought to play a role. These findings are still limited, so claims should be modest.

Applications

  • Fibre and metabolic wellness supplements
  • Smoothies, green drinks and superfood blends
  • Tortillas, breads and bakery enrichment
  • Weight-management and detox formulas
  • Face masks and skin-care products (mucilage-rich)
  • Hair-care products and natural cosmetics

Safety Notes

Nopal may lower blood sugar, so people on diabetes medication should monitor their levels and consult a doctor. Large amounts of fibre may cause bloating or loose stools; plenty of water should be taken. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should seek advice before using concentrated supplements.
