Nagarmotha Powder is made from the dried, aromatic tubers of Cyperus rotundus, known in Ayurveda as Musta. This humble sedge, famous among farmers as a stubborn weed, has fragrant, earthy tubers that are prized in Ayurvedic digestive formulas, natural perfumery, incense and traditional skin and hair care.

Arizone International supplies Nagarmotha Powder and dried tubers for Ayurvedic manufacturers, incense and fragrance makers, herbal cosmetic brands, wholesalers and exporters.

From Weed to Precious Herb

Cyperus rotundus, also called nut grass or purple nutsedge, grows in almost every warm country and is often described as one of the world's most troublesome weeds, because its underground tubers spread quickly and are hard to remove. Yet those same small, dark tubers have a warm, woody, slightly spicy smell and have been valued for thousands of years. In India, nagarmotha grows wild across the country, especially in moist soils.

Distillation of the tubers produces cypriol or nagarmotha oil, a prized material in Indian attars and perfumery for its deep, earthy, smoky scent.

Musta in Ayurveda

  • Digestive SupportMusta is one of the classic Ayurvedic herbs for digestion, appetite and loose stools, and it appears in formulas such as Mustarishta.
  • Fever FormulasUsed in traditional decoctions for fever, such as Shadanga Paniya.
  • Women's HealthFound in some traditional formulas for menstrual comfort.
  • Skin and HairUsed in herbal face packs, ubtan and hair oils for its fragrance and traditional skin benefits.

What Nagarmotha Contains

The tubers contain an essential oil rich in sesquiterpenes such as cyperene, alpha-cyperone and rotundone, which give the characteristic aroma. They also contain flavonoids, alkaloids and starch.
