Manjistha Powder is made from the dried roots of Rubia cordifolia, Indian madder. The fine, reddish powder is a star ingredient in traditional Indian skincare, used in face packs and ubtan for a clear, glowing look, and it is also a natural red dye for fabrics, soaps and crafts.
Arizone International supplies Manjistha Root Powder and cut roots for skincare and cosmetic brands, soap makers, natural dyers, Ayurvedic companies, wholesalers and exporters.
From Dye Plant to Beauty Herb
Rubia cordifolia is a climbing plant with rough stems and whorls of heart-shaped leaves, found in the hills of India, including the Himalayas and the Western Ghats. Its long, slender roots are red inside. For centuries, madder roots were one of the world's most important sources of red dye, used to colour cotton and silk, including traditional Indian block prints and hand-dyed textiles.
In Ayurveda, Manjistha is regarded as one of the best herbs for the skin and blood (Varnya and Raktashodhak), and it is found in classical preparations such as Manjishthadi Kwath and in many face pack recipes passed down in Indian homes.
What Manjistha Contains
- AnthraquinonesIncluding purpurin and munjistin, responsible for the red colour.
- NaphthoquinonesSuch as mollugin.
- Other CompoundsTriterpenoids and glycosides in smaller amounts.
Uses in Skincare
Manjistha powder is mixed with rose water, milk, yoghurt or honey to make face packs traditionally used for an even, radiant complexion and for oily or blemish-prone skin. It is often combined with sandalwood, turmeric, neem, lodhra and multani mitti. It gives a slight pinkish tint to masks and creams.
Applications
- Face packs, ubtan and skin-brightening masks
- Creams, serums and soaps (natural pink to red colour)
- Natural fabric, wool and craft dyeing
- Hair packs and herbal hair oils
- Ayurvedic churnas, capsules and blood-purifier formulas
- Lip tints and natural colour cosmetics
Natural Dyeing Tip
Manjistha gives shades from peach and pink to deep red, depending on the mordant used (such as alum) and dyeing temperature. Very hot water tends to shift the colour towards brown, so dyers usually keep the dye bath warm rather than boiling.
Safety Notes
A patch test is recommended before applying to the skin. When taken internally, Manjistha can colour urine pink, which is harmless. Internal use is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without advice.

- Rubia cordifolia root identity (stems are a common adulterant)
