Horse Gram Powder is made from the seeds of Macrotyloma uniflorum, a hardy legume known in India as kulthi, kollu or hurali. Although its English name comes from its use as horse and cattle feed, horse gram has been a nutritious food for people in South India and the hills for centuries, and it is valued for its high protein and fibre.
Arizone International supplies Horse Gram Powder and whole horse gram for food manufacturers, health-food and millet brands, Ayurvedic companies, wholesalers and exporters.
A Pulse for Tough Conditions
Horse gram grows well in poor, dry soils where few other crops survive, making it an important food in rain-fed areas of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The small, flat, brown seeds are very hard and are usually soaked, sprouted or cooked for a long time. In Tamil Nadu, kollu rasam is a warming soup traditionally made in winter, and in Karnataka, huruli saaru is a popular dish. In Uttarakhand, gahat dal is a mountain staple.
