Gooseberry Powder is made from the dried fruit of the Indian gooseberry, Phyllanthus emblica, known as amla. This sour, astringent fruit is one of India's richest natural sources of vitamin C and is used in food products, beverages, hair care and Ayurvedic formulations.
Arizone International supplies Gooseberry Powder in food and herbal grades, including whole fruit powder and spray-dried gooseberry juice powder, for food and beverage companies, supplement makers, hair-care brands, wholesalers and exporters.
Indian Gooseberry and Other Gooseberries
The word "gooseberry" is used for several unrelated fruits. The European gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa) and the Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana, known in India as rasbhari) are quite different from the Indian gooseberry. This page covers Indian gooseberry (amla), the most common gooseberry in Indian trade. Please specify if you need another type.
From Fruit to Powder
Amla trees fruit in winter, and harvesting runs from about November to February. Uttar Pradesh, especially the Pratapgarh district, is one of the most famous amla-growing regions, along with Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. For powder, fruits are washed, deseeded, sliced and dried, then milled into a fine, light brown to greenish powder. For juice powder, fresh amla juice is spray-dried with a carrier, giving a lighter, more soluble powder that is easy to use in drinks.
Two Main Grades
- Whole Fruit Gooseberry PowderContains the fibre and full natural profile of the fruit. Ideal for churnas, hair care and food use.

Packaging and Storage
Gooseberry Powder absorbs moisture easily and can form lumps. It is packed in moisture-proof, food-grade bags and should be stored sealed in a cool, dry place away from light, which also helps preserve vitamin C.
Amla powder is also a traditional natural mordant in fabric dyeing.
Its sour taste works well in chutneys and pickle masalas.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Gooseberry (amla) powder absorbs moisture and can go dark, so keep packs sealed. Ask for vitamin C or tannin content on the COA.
