Flaxseed Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Flaxseed Powder, also called ground flaxseed or flaxseed meal, is made by milling the seeds of Linum usitatissimum, known in India as alsi. Grinding breaks the hard seed coat, making the omega-3 fats, lignans and fibre inside much easier for the body to use than whole seeds, which often pass through undigested.
Arizone International supplies Flaxseed Powder, in full-fat and partially defatted grades, for bakery and food manufacturers, health-food brands, supplement makers, animal feed producers, wholesalers and exporters.
Why Ground Flaxseed?
Whole flax seeds are small and tough, and many pass through the digestive system intact. Milling them into powder releases their nutrients. Ground flaxseed also has a useful kitchen property: when mixed with water, it forms a gel that can replace eggs in vegan baking. A common guide is one tablespoon of ground flax with three tablespoons of water to replace one egg.
India grows flaxseed mainly in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. In many Indian homes, roasted alsi powder is mixed with jaggery or made into laddoos during winter.
Types of Flaxseed Powder
- Full-Fat Flaxseed PowderContains all the natural oil, rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) omega-3.
- Partially Defatted Flaxseed MealMade after some of the oil is pressed out, with higher protein and fibre and better shelf life.
- Brown or Golden FlaxBoth are available; they are nutritionally similar.
What Flaxseed Powder Contains
- Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant omega-3
- Lignans, mainly SDG, in very high amounts
- Soluble fibre (mucilage) and insoluble fibre
- Plant protein, magnesium and manganese
Applications
- Breads, rotis, muffins and crackers
- Breakfast cereals, oats and granola
- Egg replacement in vegan baking
- Smoothies, protein shakes and health drinks
- Fibre and omega-3 supplements
- Pet food and animal feed
Freshness Matters
Once flaxseed is ground, its omega-3 oil is exposed to air and can oxidise, developing a bitter or paint-like taste. We mill in controlled conditions, pack in oxygen-barrier bags, and recommend cool storage. Partially defatted meal is more stable. For home use, ground flax should be kept in an airtight container, ideally in the fridge.
Safety Notes
Flaxseed is high in fibre, so it should be eaten with enough water. People with bowel obstruction, or those taking blood thinners or diabetes medicine, should seek advice before using large amounts. Raw flaxseed contains small amounts of cyanogenic glycosides, which are not a concern at normal intakes.
Quality Parameters
- Oil content, fatty acid profile and ALA level
- Peroxide value and freshness
- Moisture, protein and fibre
- Microbiology, including Salmonella
- Pesticide residues, cadmium and other heavy metals
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ground flaxseed goes rancid quickly, so keep it cool and sealed, and use it within the shelf life on the label. Cold-milled flax lasts longer.
