DHA Powder is a microencapsulated, free-flowing powder that provides docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in high amounts in the brain and the retina of the eye. The powder form makes it possible to add DHA to infant formula, milk powders, bakery, beverages, gummies and tablets, where liquid oil would be difficult to use.

What Is DHA?
DHA is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. The body can make only small amounts of it from plant omega-3 (ALA), so it is usually obtained from food or supplements. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision, and maternal DHA intake contributes to normal brain and eye development of the foetus and breastfed infants, according to authorised claims in the European Union at specified intakes.
Algal DHA vs Fish DHA
- Algal DHAProduced by fermenting microalgae such as Schizochytrium in closed tanks. Fish get their DHA by eating algae, so algal DHA is the original source. It is vegetarian and vegan-friendly, free from ocean contaminants and widely used in infant formula.
- Fish Oil DHADerived from refined fish or tuna oil, usually together with EPA. It is often more economical.
Why Microencapsulation?
DHA is highly unsaturated and oxidises easily, which can cause fishy tastes and smells. In DHA powder, tiny droplets of oil are coated with a protective layer, usually made from proteins, starches or gum arabic, and spray-dried. This protects the DHA from oxygen, masks taste and allows the oil to mix into dry products. Powders commonly contain around 10% DHA, though other strengths are available.

DHA is generally well tolerated. High intakes of omega-3 fats may have a mild blood-thinning effect, so people on anticoagulants should consult a doctor. Infant nutrition products must follow specific regulations in each market.
