Chirata Powder is made from the dried whole plant of Swertia chirata, a small Himalayan herb known in Ayurveda as Kiratatikta or Bhunimba. It is one of the most bitter herbs in Indian traditional medicine and the main ingredient of Sudarshan Churna, a classical formula traditionally used for fevers.

Arizone International supplies Chirata Powder and whole dried chirata for Ayurvedic manufacturers, herbal companies, wholesalers and exporters.

The Bitter Herb of the Mountains

Swertia chirata is an annual or biennial herb that grows at high altitudes in the temperate Himalayas, particularly in Nepal, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh. The whole plant, with its reddish-purple stems and small greenish-yellow flowers, is collected at flowering time and dried in bundles. In local markets it is sold as chirayata. Its bitterness is so intense that even a small pinch lingers on the tongue.

Chirata was once exported from India to Europe and listed as a bitter tonic in the British Pharmacopoeia. Today it remains a staple of Ayurvedic and folk medicine across the Indian subcontinent.

Traditional Uses

  • Seasonal FeversChirata is the chief herb in Sudarshan Churna, a classical polyherbal formula traditionally used for recurrent fevers.
  • Digestive BitterUsed to stimulate appetite and support digestion.
  • Liver SupportFound in traditional liver and "blood-purifying" preparations.
  • Skin WellnessUsed in some traditional skin formulas together with neem and other bitter herbs.

In many Indian homes, chirayata was soaked overnight in water and the bitter liquid drunk in the morning as a traditional tonic.

What Chirata Contains

The bitterness comes mainly from secoiridoid glycosides such as amarogentin, swertiamarin and gentiopicrin. Amarogentin is considered one of the most bitter natural compounds known. The plant also contains xanthones such as mangiferin, and various flavonoids and triterpenes.

Applications

  • Sudarshan Churna and other classical formulas
  • Ayurvedic churnas, kadhas, tablets and capsules
  • Digestive bitters and herbal tonics
  • Liver and seasonal wellness blends
  • Private label Ayurvedic products

Sustainability and Authenticity

Chirata is largely collected from the wild, and overharvesting has reduced natural populations in some areas. It is also often adulterated with other, cheaper Swertia species or unrelated bitter plants such as kalmegh. We work with regular suppliers and check identity for each lot.

Safety Notes

Chirata may lower blood sugar, so people on diabetes medicines should seek medical advice. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with stomach ulcers. Use should follow the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Quality Parameters

  • Correct identity of Swertia chirata
  • Bitterness value and marker content where specified
  • Moisture, ash and foreign matter
  • Microbiology, heavy metals and pesticide residues

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Chirata is very bitter, so capsules or blends suit most consumer products. Ask for identity testing, as other bitter herbs are sometimes sold as chirata.
