Chicory Root Powder Roasted
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Roasted Chicory Root Powder is made from chicory roots that are dried, roasted until dark brown and ground. It has a rich, slightly bitter, caramel-like flavour and brews into a dark cup that tastes much like coffee, but without caffeine. It is used as a coffee substitute and, very often, blended with coffee.
Arizone International supplies Roasted Chicory Root Powder and roasted chicory granules for coffee roasters, instant coffee and beverage manufacturers, health-drink brands, wholesalers and exporters.
Chicory and Filter Coffee
In South India, the famous filter coffee is traditionally made from a blend of coffee and roasted chicory. Chicory adds body, a thicker texture, a darker colour and a pleasant bitterness that goes well with milk and sugar. In India, such blends are sold as coffee-chicory mixtures and must declare the ratio on the label under food regulations. Chicory-coffee blends are also a tradition in France, Belgium and New Orleans in the United States, where café au lait with chicory is famous.
During periods of coffee shortage, such as wartime in Europe, roasted chicory was often used on its own as a coffee substitute.
How Chicory Is Roasted
Chicory roots (Cichorium intybus) are washed, cut into small pieces and dried. The dried pieces, called cossettes, are roasted, sometimes with a small amount of oil or sugar, until they turn dark brown and develop caramel and coffee-like aromas. During roasting, much of the root's inulin is broken down into sugars and flavour compounds such as oxymethylfurfural, which is why roasted chicory contains less inulin than raw chicory root powder.
