Chicory Root Powder is made from the dried, unroasted roots of Cichorium intybus. Unlike roasted chicory, which is used as a coffee substitute, raw chicory root powder is valued mainly as a natural source of inulin, a prebiotic fibre, and as a traditional herb in Unani and Ayurvedic practice, where it is known as Kasni.

Arizone International supplies Chicory Root Powder (unroasted) for prebiotic and fibre product makers, supplement brands, Unani and Ayurvedic manufacturers, wholesalers and exporters.

A Root Rich in Inulin

Chicory is a perennial plant with sky-blue flowers that grows wild along roadsides in Europe, West Asia and India. Its long taproot stores energy in the form of inulin, and chicory root is the world's main commercial source of this fibre. Inulin is a type of fructan that humans cannot digest in the small intestine. Instead, it reaches the large intestine, where it feeds beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria, which is why it is called a prebiotic.

Chicory root inulin is recognised in the European Union with an authorised health claim related to normal bowel function when consumed at a sufficient daily amount, which has helped it become a popular ingredient in fibre-enriched foods.

Kasni in Traditional Medicine

In Unani medicine, chicory, called Kasni, is one of the best known liver herbs, and its roots, seeds and leaves are used in many traditional preparations. It also appears in some well-known Ayurvedic liver formulas. It is described as cooling and is traditionally used for digestive and liver support.

What Chicory Root Contains

  • Sesquiterpene LactonesSuch as lactucin and lactucopicrin, which give a bitter taste.

Safety Notes

Inulin can cause gas, bloating and loose stools, especially when people start with large amounts. A gradual increase is usually recommended. Chicory belongs to the daisy family, so people allergic to ragweed or related plants may react. People with gallstones and pregnant women should seek advice before using concentrated chicory products.
