Calendula Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Calendula Powder is made from the dried golden-orange flower petals of Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold. It is one of the most loved botanicals in natural skincare and soap making, valued for its gentle, soothing image, its cheerful colour and its long history in European herbal tradition.
Arizone International supplies Calendula Powder and dried calendula petals for soap and cosmetic makers, herbal tea blenders, balm and ointment producers, wholesalers and exporters.
The "Poor Man's Saffron"
Calendula has been grown in European gardens since the Middle Ages. Its bright petals were once added to soups, stews, cheese and butter for colour, earning it the nickname "poor man's saffron". Its name comes from the Latin "calendae", the first day of the month, because the plant seemed to flower almost every month. In folk tradition, calendula was widely used on minor cuts, scrapes and irritated skin.
Calendula is different from the African and French marigolds (Tagetes) used in Indian garlands, which belong to another genus.
A Soap Maker's Favourite
Most natural flower colours fade or turn brown in handmade cold-process soap because soap is strongly alkaline. Calendula petals are a notable exception: they tend to keep their yellow-orange colour, which is why whole petals and calendula powder are among the most popular natural additives in soap. Calendula-infused oil is also widely used as a soap and balm base.
