Calamine Powder is a fine, pale pink mineral powder made mainly of zinc oxide with a small amount of iron oxide, which gives it its characteristic colour. It is best known as the main ingredient of calamine lotion, the soothing pink lotion used for itching, insect bites, prickly heat and mild sunburn, and it is also used in face packs, dusting powders and cosmetics.

What Is Calamine?
Historically, the name calamine referred to natural zinc ores. Today, pharmaceutical calamine is a prepared product: zinc oxide or zinc carbonate combined with a small percentage of ferric oxide, which tints it pink to match skin tone better than plain white zinc oxide. Pharmacopoeias such as the Indian, British and United States Pharmacopoeias describe standards for calamine.
