Butterfly Pea Flower Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Butterfly Pea Flower Powder is made from the dried, deep blue flowers of Clitoria ternatea. It is best known for making naturally blue drinks and foods that magically turn purple or pink when lemon juice is added. In India the plant is called aparajita and is also valued in Ayurveda.
Arizone International supplies Butterfly Pea Flower Powder and dried flowers for tea brands, beverage and bakery companies, natural colour users, cosmetic makers, wholesalers and exporters.
About Butterfly Pea
Clitoria ternatea is a fast-growing climbing vine with striking, bright blue flowers, widely grown in India and Southeast Asia as an ornamental and fodder plant. In Thailand, the flowers are brewed into a blue drink called nam dok anchan, and in Malaysia they colour the famous blue rice dish nasi kerabu. In India, aparajita flowers are offered in temple worship, and in some regions the plant is used as one of the herbs known as Shankhpushpi in Ayurvedic practice.
The Colour-Changing Magic
The blue colour comes from special anthocyanins called ternatins. Like other anthocyanins, they change colour with pH. In neutral water, butterfly pea tea is a deep blue. Add lemon or lime juice and it turns violet, then pink as it becomes more acidic. This effect has made butterfly pea hugely popular in "colour-changing" teas, lemonades, cocktails and mocktails.

Regulatory Note
The regulatory status of butterfly pea flower differs by country. In the United States, butterfly pea flower extract was approved by the FDA as a colour additive for certain foods and beverages in 2021. In the European Union, butterfly pea flower may be subject to novel food rules for some uses. Buyers should check the permitted uses in their market; we can help with documentation.

Handling Tips
The blue colour is most stable in neutral conditions and away from strong light and heat. In acidic products it will appear purple or pink, which can be used creatively. Store the powder in airtight, light-proof packaging in a cool, dry place.
Safety Notes
Butterfly pea flower is widely used as a tea and food colour. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and people on medication should seek advice before using concentrated supplements.
