Blueberry Powder is made from dried blueberries, the small, deep blue berries of Vaccinium species. It captures the sweet-tart flavour, vivid purple-blue colour and natural anthocyanins of fresh blueberries in a convenient, shelf-stable form for smoothies, bakery, snacks, supplements and cosmetics.
Arizone International supplies Blueberry Powder for food and beverage manufacturers, superfood and supplement brands, bakeries, cosmetic makers, wholesalers and exporters.
About Blueberries
Blueberries are native to North America, where indigenous peoples dried wild berries for winter food long before European settlers arrived. Two main types are used commercially: cultivated highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum), which are larger and sweeter, and wild lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium), which are smaller and more intensely coloured. The United States, Canada, Peru and Chile are among the world's leading producers. Blueberries should not be confused with bilberries, a related European berry with darker flesh.
How Blueberry Powder Is Made
- Freeze-Dried Blueberry PowderWhole berries are frozen and dried under vacuum, then milled. This keeps the most colour, flavour and nutrients, and gives a bright purple, 100% fruit powder.
- Spray-Dried Blueberry PowderMade from blueberry juice or puree dried on a carrier such as maltodextrin. It dissolves well and is economical.
- Air-Dried and MilledDried berries ground into powder, suitable for some bakery uses.
What Blueberries Contain
- Anthocyanins such as delphinidin, malvidin and cyanidin glycosides, which give the blue colour
- Other polyphenols, including chlorogenic acid and flavonols
- Dietary fibre, especially in whole-berry powders
- Vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese
Blueberries have been the subject of research on memory, vascular health and antioxidant status, which has helped make them a leading "superfruit" ingredient.

Packaging and Storage
Fruit powders are hygroscopic and can form lumps when exposed to air. Blueberry Powder is packed in moisture-proof, food-grade bags, often inside cartons, and should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place and resealed after use.
Wild blueberry powder generally has a deeper colour and higher anthocyanin concentration than cultivated blueberry powder.
It also pairs well with vanilla, lemon and yoghurt flavours.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Freeze-dried blueberry powder keeps more colour and flavour than air-dried powder. Ask for anthocyanin content, and pack it with a desiccant.
Tell us whether you need freeze-dried or air-dried powder, and whether a carrier is acceptable, so we can quote the right grade.
