Ashoka Powder is made from the dried stem bark of Saraca asoca, a sacred evergreen tree of India with dense foliage and bright orange-red flowers. The powder is reddish-brown with an astringent, slightly bitter taste, and it is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic women's wellness formulations.
Arizone International supplies Ashoka Powder to Ayurvedic manufacturers, women's wellness brands, supplement makers and exporters, in bulk or as private label products.
About the Ashoka Tree
The true Ashoka tree grows in the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats, the Himalayan foothills and north-east India. Its name means "without sorrow" in Sanskrit. The tree is sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism, and the Buddha is said to have been born under an Ashoka tree. Its clusters of fragrant flowers change from orange to red as they age.
Because of heavy demand for the bark, wild Saraca asoca is now listed as vulnerable, and responsible sourcing from managed and cultivated trees is important.
True Ashoka vs False Ashoka
The tall, narrow tree often planted along Indian roads and called ashoka is usually Polyalthia longifolia, the false ashoka or mast tree. Its bark is sometimes sold as a substitute, which is a common quality problem. Genuine Ashoka Powder must come from Saraca asoca, and identity should be confirmed by testing.
Key Compounds
- TanninsGive the bark its strong astringency.
- FlavonoidsIncluding catechins and epicatechins.
- Glycosides and SterolsPresent in smaller amounts.
Traditional Use
In Ayurveda, Ashoka bark is valued as a uterine tonic and is the main ingredient of Ashokarishta, a well-known fermented preparation for women's health. It is often combined with Shatavari, Lodhra and other herbs. These are traditional uses, not approved medical claims.
Applications
- Women's wellness capsules and tablets
- Ashokarishta and Ayurvedic formulations
- Herbal churnas and decoctions
- Blends with Shatavari, Lodhra or Manjistha
- Ashoka extract production
- Private label Ayurvedic ranges
Safety
Ashoka is traditionally used under the guidance of Ayurvedic practitioners. It is not recommended during pregnancy without medical advice.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Saraca asoca bark, not Polyalthia longifolia)
- Mesh size and moisture content
- Total ash and acid-insoluble ash
- Tannin content, where specified
- Microbiological limits, heavy metals and pesticide residues
Packaging and Storage
Ashoka Powder is supplied in 20 to 25 kg bags with a food-grade liner, or smaller packs for private label. Store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ashoka bark is in high demand, and cheaper Polyalthia longifolia bark is often sold in its place, so always ask for identity testing to confirm Saraca asoca. The powder is widely used in women's wellness blends and Ayurvedic preparations. Ask for tannin content and heavy metal results, and keep the powder in sealed packs away from moisture.
