Artichoke Powder is a fine, greenish-brown powder made from the dried leaves of the globe artichoke, Cynara scolymus. While the edible flower bud is a Mediterranean delicacy, the bitter leaves have been used for generations in European herbal practice for digestion and liver wellness.

Arizone International supplies Artichoke Leaf Powder for supplement manufacturers, herbal tea brands, digestive-bitters producers, wholesalers and exporters.

From Vegetable Garden to Herbal Powder

The globe artichoke is a large thistle grown mainly in Italy, Spain, France and Egypt. What we eat is the unopened flower bud; if left on the plant, it opens into a spectacular purple thistle flower. The large, deeply cut, grey-green leaves are far more bitter than the bud and contain higher amounts of the plant's active compounds.

For powder, the leaves are harvested, dried and milled. In Italy, artichoke leaves also give their bitter character to Cynar, a well-known artichoke-based bitter liqueur traditionally drunk before or after meals.

What Artichoke Leaves Contain

  • Caffeoylquinic AcidsIncluding cynarin and chlorogenic acid, the key markers of artichoke leaf.
  • FlavonoidsSuch as luteolin and its glycosides.
  • Sesquiterpene LactonesIncluding cynaropicrin, which gives the strong bitter taste.
  • Fibre and MineralsPresent in whole-leaf powder.

Traditional Use

In European herbal medicine, artichoke leaf is traditionally used to support digestion, especially after rich, fatty meals, and for liver and gallbladder wellness. European herbal monographs recognise artichoke leaf for symptoms of indigestion such as fullness and bloating. Bitter herbs like artichoke are thought to stimulate the flow of digestive juices and bile.

Applications

  • Digestive and liver wellness capsules and tablets
  • Herbal tea blends and digestive infusions
  • Digestive bitters and aperitif-style drinks
  • Liver blends with milk thistle, dandelion and turmeric
  • Raw material for artichoke leaf extract
  • Private label herbal ranges

Powder or Extract?

Leaf powder keeps the full natural profile of the herb and is cost-effective for teas and traditional products. Standardised artichoke leaf extract provides higher, defined levels of caffeoylquinic acids for supplements. We can supply both and advise on the right choice.

Safety Notes

Artichoke should not be used by people with gallstones or bile duct obstruction without medical advice. People allergic to plants in the daisy family may react to it. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before use.
