Arrowroot Powder is a fine, silky white starch extracted from the underground rhizomes of Maranta arundinacea. It is prized as a gentle, easy-to-digest thickener that gives sauces and fillings a clear, glossy finish, and it has long been used in baby foods, gluten-free baking and the classic arrowroot biscuit.
Arizone International supplies Arrowroot Powder in food and cosmetic grades for food manufacturers, bakeries, baby-food and health-food brands, cosmetic makers, wholesalers and exporters.
About Arrowroot
Arrowroot is a tropical plant native to South America and the Caribbean. The island of St Vincent in the Caribbean was historically the world's leading producer of arrowroot starch. The name is often explained by an old belief that the root was used to draw poison from arrow wounds, though it may also come from an indigenous word for the plant. In India, arrowroot is grown in Kerala, where it is called koova, and koova podi (arrowroot powder) mixed with milk or water is a traditional food for children and people recovering from illness.
To make arrowroot powder, the rhizomes are washed, peeled, grated and soaked in water. The starch is washed out, allowed to settle, then dried into a fine white powder.
Why Cooks Love Arrowroot
- Clear, Glossy FinishUnlike cornflour, which turns cloudy, arrowroot gives transparent, shiny sauces and fruit glazes.
- Thickens at Lower TemperaturesUseful for delicate sauces and egg-based dishes that should not boil.
- Acid Tolerant and Freeze-Thaw StableWorks well with fruit fillings and in frozen foods.
- Neutral TasteDoes not add any flavour of its own.
- Naturally Gluten-Free and Grain-FreePopular in gluten-free and paleo-style recipes.
One limitation: arrowroot can become slimy when combined with dairy, so cornflour is often preferred for milk-based sauces.
Applications
- Sauces, gravies, soups and fruit glazes
- Arrowroot biscuits, cookies and gluten-free baking
- Baby foods and infant cereals
- Puddings, jellies and dessert fillings
- Natural cosmetics: dry shampoos, body powders and deodorants
- Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical excipient uses
A Note on Authenticity
Because pure arrowroot starch is more expensive than other starches, some products sold as "arrowroot" are actually tapioca or other starches, or blends. Buyers should specify true Maranta arundinacea starch if required. We can confirm the source and provide documentation.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical source (Maranta arundinacea)
- Whiteness, fineness and odour
- Moisture, ash and pH
- Starch content and viscosity
- Microbiology and heavy metals
Packaging and Storage
Arrowroot Powder is packed in food-grade, poly-lined bags, typically 25 kg, or in smaller retail packs. Store in a cool, dry place away from strong odours.
Arrowroot is also used in teething biscuits.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Specify whether you need true arrowroot (Maranta) or a substitute starch, as labelling rules differ. Keep it dry, as it absorbs moisture.
Tell us the quantity and packaging you need, and we will share a specification with the quote.
