Aritha Shell Powder is a premium soapnut powder made only from the dried fruit shells (pericarp) of the soapnut, with the hard black seeds removed. Because the natural cleansing saponins are concentrated in the shell, seed-free shell powder foams more readily, has a lighter colour and gives more consistent results than powder made from whole fruits.

Why Remove the Seeds?

Each soapnut fruit contains one large, hard, black seed. The seed has little cleansing value and adds weight, a darker colour and a gritty texture to the powder. Deseeding the fruits by hand or machine before milling gives a purer powder with a higher share of saponins per gram. For shampoo powders, face cleansers and liquid extracts, shell powder is therefore the preferred grade.

About the Soapnut

Soapnuts, known as aritha or reetha in India, come from trees of the Sapindus genus. Sapindus mukorossi grows in the Himalayan foothills of northern India and Nepal, while Sapindus trifoliatus grows in South India. The fruits are harvested in autumn and winter, dried until the shells turn a rich golden-brown and slightly sticky, then deseeded and milled.

Using Aritha Shell Powder

For a hair wash, the powder can be mixed with water to form a paste or soaked overnight, then boiled briefly and strained to make a foaming liquid. Many traditional recipes combine aritha, shikakai and amla in roughly equal parts. For manufacturing, the powder can be extracted in water to prepare liquid soapnut concentrate.

Safety Notes

Saponins sting the eyes, so eye contact should be avoided and products should carry an eye warning. Aritha shell powder is for external use only. A patch test is advisable for sensitive skin.
