Alum Powder is a white, crystalline mineral salt, most commonly potassium alum (potassium aluminium sulphate). Known in India as phitkari, it is a household staple used after shaving, for clearing muddy water, in natural deodorants and in traditional remedies. It is also important in water treatment, dyeing, tanning and some food and pharmaceutical uses.
Arizone International supplies Alum Powder and alum crystals in cosmetic, food, pharmaceutical and technical grades for manufacturers, wholesalers and exporters.
What Is Alum?
"Alum" is a family of double sulphate salts. The most common in personal care is potassium alum, KAl(SO4)2·12H2O, which forms clear, colourless crystals. Ammonium alum is another type, also used in deodorant crystals and some industrial applications. Alum has been used since ancient times: the Egyptians and Romans used it as a mordant to fix dyes on cloth, and it was an important trade good in medieval Europe.
How Alum Works
- Astringent ActionAlum tightens skin tissue and helps stop minor bleeding, which is why a block of alum is used by barbers after shaving.
- Anti-Odour EffectIt creates conditions unfavourable to odour-causing bacteria, making it the main ingredient in "crystal" deodorants.
- CoagulationIn water, alum helps small suspended particles clump together and settle, clearing cloudy water. Rubbing a piece of phitkari in a pot of muddy water is a traditional Indian practice.
- MordantingAlum helps natural dyes bind to fibres, giving brighter and more lasting colours.

- Food uses in small amounts, such as pickling and baking powders, where permitted
- Traditional oral rinses and home remedies
- Vaccine adjuvants use special pharmaceutical aluminium compounds, not household alum

The powder can irritate eyes; wash with water if contact occurs. Cosmetic and food uses must follow local regulations.
