Akarkara Root Powder is made from the dried roots of Anacyclus pyrethrum, known in English as pellitory root. It is famous for one striking effect: chewing a small piece of the root makes the mouth tingle, go slightly numb and water heavily. This unusual property has made akarkara an important herb in Ayurveda and Unani medicine, especially for oral care.
Arizone International supplies Akarkara Root Powder and whole root in bulk for Ayurvedic and Unani manufacturers, oral-care brands, herbal companies, wholesalers and exporters.
About Akarkara
Anacyclus pyrethrum is a small perennial plant from the daisy family, with white-and-red daisy-like flowers and a thick, brownish, tapering root. It is native to North Africa, especially Algeria and Morocco, and the Mediterranean region. Much of the akarkara used in India has traditionally been imported, although small-scale cultivation exists in some Indian regions.
The name akarkara is also sometimes applied to Spilanthes acmella (the "toothache plant"), which has a similar tingling effect. The two are different plants, so correct identification is important.
What Causes the Tingling?
The root contains alkamides, especially pellitorine. These compounds stimulate nerve endings in the mouth, causing tingling, a warm pungency, local numbness and a strong flow of saliva. This is why akarkara has traditionally been used for toothache, sore gums and dry mouth, and in tooth powders.
Traditional Uses
- Oral CareUsed in manjan (herbal tooth powders), gum-care preparations and remedies for toothache.
- Speech and ThroatTraditionally chewed or used in formulas for stammering, sore throat and hoarse voice.
- Nervine TonicUsed in classical preparations for the nervous system and memory.
- Men's VitalityA common ingredient in Unani and Ayurvedic vitality formulations, often with ashwagandha, safed musli and shatavari.
Applications
- Herbal tooth powders, toothpastes and gum-care products
- Ayurvedic and Unani formulations
- Men's vitality blends
- Herbal capsules and tablets
- Traditional oils and balms
- Private label herbal products
Safety Notes
Akarkara is strong and should be used in small amounts. It can irritate the mouth and stomach in large doses. People allergic to plants in the daisy family should avoid it, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Finished product claims must follow local regulations.
