Activated Charcoal Powder is a very fine, jet-black powder made from carbon-rich materials such as coconut shells, wood or bamboo that have been "activated" to create a huge internal surface area. Just one gram can have a surface area of several hundred to over a thousand square metres, which allows it to trap many substances on its surface. It is used in water and air filtration, cosmetics, oral care, food processing and emergency medicine.
Arizone International supplies Activated Charcoal Powder in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and technical grades for manufacturers, brands, wholesalers and exporters.
How Activated Charcoal Is Made
First, the raw material is heated in low oxygen to turn it into charcoal. Then it is "activated", usually with steam at high temperature, which burns away small parts of the carbon and opens up a vast network of tiny pores. The result is a lightweight, highly porous material. Coconut shell is a favourite raw material because it produces hard, clean carbon with many fine pores. India, particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is one of the world's leading producers of coconut shell activated carbon.
Adsorption, Not Absorption
Activated charcoal works by adsorption: molecules stick to the surface of its pores. This is why it removes odours, colours, chlorine and many organic compounds from water and air. In hospitals, doctors use specially graded activated charcoal as an emergency treatment for certain types of poisoning, under medical supervision.
Applications
- Cosmetics and Personal CareFace masks, cleansers, peel-off masks, soaps, scrubs and deodorants, especially for oily skin products.
- Oral CareCharcoal toothpastes and tooth powders. Dentists advise caution, as coarse charcoal can be abrasive to enamel.
- Food and BeverageDecolourising sugar and oils, purifying water, and as the black food colour "vegetable carbon" (E153) where permitted.
- SupplementsCharcoal capsules sold for occasional bloating in some markets.
- FiltrationWater filters, air purifiers, gas masks and aquariums.
Important Safety Notes
Activated charcoal taken by mouth can bind medicines, vitamins and nutrients in the gut and make them less effective. Supplements should be taken well apart from other medicines, and people on regular medication should consult a doctor. Charcoal can cause constipation and black stools. Food use as a colour is not permitted in every market; for example, it is allowed in the EU as E153 but not approved as a colour additive in the United States.
