Acacia Gum Powder, also known as gum arabic, is a natural, edible gum collected from the hardened sap of certain acacia trees. It is a fine, off-white to pale cream powder that dissolves easily in water and is used as an emulsifier, stabiliser, binder and soluble fibre in foods, beverages, confectionery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In food labelling it is known as E414.
Arizone International supplies Acacia Gum Powder in food, pharmaceutical and technical grades for beverage and confectionery makers, supplement brands, pharmaceutical companies, wholesalers and exporters.
Where Gum Arabic Comes From
True gum arabic comes mainly from two trees, Acacia senegal (now Senegalia senegal) and Acacia seyal (Vachellia seyal), which grow across the dry "gum belt" of Africa's Sahel region. Sudan has long been the world's biggest source, followed by Chad and Nigeria. When the bark is cut or damaged, the tree releases a sap that hardens into amber-coloured "tears". These are hand-collected, cleaned, sorted and either sold as kibbled pieces or dissolved, filtered and spray-dried into a fine powder.
In India, the word "gond" is used for several edible gums. Babool gum from Acacia nilotica and gum from other trees are used in traditional sweets such as gond laddoos. Buyers should confirm whether they need true gum arabic (Acacia senegal or seyal) or a local acacia gum.
Why It Is So Useful
- Highly SolubleIt dissolves in cold water to very high concentrations with fairly low viscosity, unlike most gums.
- Natural EmulsifierA small protein fraction lets it hold oil droplets in water, which is why it is used in soft drink flavour emulsions.
- Film-Forming and BindingUsed to coat sweets, bind tablets and encapsulate flavours.
- Soluble Dietary FibreAcacia fibre is used as a gentle prebiotic fibre in supplements.
Applications
- Soft drink and beverage flavour emulsions
- Confectionery, gum pastilles, coatings and glazes
- Spray-dried flavours and encapsulation
- Prebiotic fibre supplements and fortified foods
- Tablet binder and suspending agent in pharmaceuticals
- Cosmetics, lithography, watercolour paints and adhesives
Quality Parameters
- Botanical source (Acacia senegal or Acacia seyal)
- Moisture, ash and insoluble matter
- Viscosity and optical rotation
- Microbiology, including Salmonella and E. coli
- Heavy metals and compliance with food additive specifications (E414 / JECFA)
- Mesh size for powders
Packaging and Storage
Acacia Gum Powder is packed in multi-wall paper bags or fibre drums with food-grade liners, typically 25 kg. Store in a cool, dry place, as the powder absorbs moisture and can form lumps.
Gum arabic has been traded for thousands of years; ancient Egyptians used it in paints and in the preparation of mummies.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Acacia gum is graded mainly by colour, viscosity and solubility, so share your application and the grade you need. For food use, ask for a food-grade spray-dried powder with microbiology results.
