Manjistha Extract is a concentrated powder made from the roots of Rubia cordifolia, known as Indian madder. The roots contain natural red pigments, and the extract is used in Ayurvedic formulations for skin and blood purification, in skin care and brightening cosmetics, and as a natural colour.

Arizone International manufactures and exports Manjistha Extract for Ayurvedic manufacturers, skin care brands, supplement makers and private label businesses.

About Manjistha

Rubia cordifolia is a climbing perennial with rough, square stems and long, red roots. It grows in the hills of the Himalayas, the Western Ghats and north-east India, as well as in other parts of Asia and Africa. Its roots have been used for centuries as a red dye for cotton and silk, and Manjistha is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda for skin health. It is a close relative of European madder, Rubia tinctorum.

How Manjistha Extract Is Made

Dried roots are cleaned, crushed and extracted with water or water-alcohol. The extract is concentrated and spray dried into a reddish-brown powder. Hydro-alcoholic extracts contain more of the anthraquinone pigments, while water extracts contain more of the water-soluble compounds.

Standardisation Options

  • Ratio ExtractsSuch as 10:1 or 20:1, the most common grades.
  • Purpurin or Total AnthraquinonesSpecified by HPLC or UV on request.
  • Tannins or PolyphenolsWhere required.

Key Compounds

  • AnthraquinonesSuch as purpurin, munjistin and alizarin-type compounds, which give the red colour.
  • NaphthoquinonesSuch as mollugin, studied for its activity.
  • Glycosides and TriterpenesPresent in smaller amounts.

Traditional Use

In Ayurveda, Manjistha is known as a blood purifier and is traditionally used for clear, even-toned skin, often with neem, turmeric and sandalwood. It is also used in face packs and in the classic Manjisthadi formulations. These are traditional uses, not approved health claims.

Applications

  • Skin wellness capsules and Ayurvedic formulations
  • Face packs, serums and brightening creams
  • Herbal soaps and body care
  • Blood purifier blends with neem, turmeric or sarsaparilla
  • Natural red colour for cosmetics and textiles

Safety

Manjistha can colour urine red, which is harmless. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. People taking medicines should seek medical advice before using concentrated products.
