Kokum Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Kokum Extract is made from the fruit rind of Garcinia indica, a slender evergreen tree that grows along the Konkan coast and the Western Ghats. If you have ever had a glass of pink solkadhi in Goa or a cooling kokum sherbet in Maharashtra, you already know the fruit's gentle sour taste and deep purple-red colour.
Arizone International manufactures, supplies and exports Kokum Extract from India, standardised to hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and available in custom grades for food, beverage and nutraceutical companies.
A Coastal Fruit
Kokum trees grow in Goa, the Konkan region of Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka and parts of Kerala. The fruits ripen in the summer months, just before the monsoon. Local families cut the rind, soak it in the fruit's own juice with salt and dry it in the sun to make "amsul", which is used in curries in place of tamarind.
The seeds of the same fruit yield kokum butter, a hard, pale fat valued in cosmetics and confectionery. Kokum Extract, by contrast, is made from the rind and focuses on its acids and pigments.
Key Constituents
- Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA)The main organic acid in kokum rind, also found in Garcinia cambogia. Extracts are commonly standardised at 20% to 60% HCA.
- GarcinolA yellow compound found in the rind that has attracted research interest.
- AnthocyaninsNatural pigments that give kokum its striking purple-red colour.
- Natural Sour TasteMakes the extract useful as a flavour and acidulant.
Kokum vs Garcinia Cambogia
Both fruits belong to the Garcinia genus and both contain HCA. Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind) is more commonly used in weight-management supplements. Kokum has the advantage of its attractive colour, milder taste and strong traditional use as a food in western India, so it works very well in drinks and food products.
Applications
- Weight-management and appetite-support supplements
- Kokum sherbet, syrups and concentrates
- Solkadhi mixes and ready-to-drink beverages
- Natural colour and souring agent in foods
- Digestive and cooling Ayurvedic formulations
- Candies, jellies and confectionery
- Skin-care products using fruit acids and antioxidants
In Ayurveda, kokum is described as cooling and helpful for digestion, especially in the heat of summer. Modern supplement claims should be checked against the rules in the country of sale.
Specifications and Storage
We supply Kokum Extract as a reddish-brown to purple powder with HCA content confirmed by HPLC or titration, as agreed. Salt forms such as calcium or potassium HCA can be prepared on request for better stability. The extract is hygroscopic and should be kept in airtight, moisture-proof packaging in a cool, dry place.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for HCA content by HPLC on the COA.
