Juniper Berry Extract is made from the blue-black "berries" of Juniperus communis. Strictly speaking, they are not berries at all but small, fleshy cones. Their sharp, pine-like and slightly citrus flavour is exactly what gives gin its name and character, and the extract carries that same aromatic profile into food, drinks, supplements and cosmetics.

Arizone International supplies Juniper Berry Extract to beverage, flavour, nutraceutical and personal-care manufacturers. We offer powder and liquid forms in bulk as per customer specification.

About Juniper

Common juniper is one of the most widely spread conifers in the world, found across Europe, North America and Asia. In India, juniper species grow in the high Himalayas, and dried juniper is burnt as incense in many Himalayan Buddhist communities.

The berries are slow to mature. They usually take around eighteen months to two years to ripen from green to deep blue, so the same shrub can carry both green and ripe cones at once. Only the ripe ones are picked for use.

The word "gin" comes from "genever", the Dutch word for juniper. Juniper was also used in medieval Europe as a traditional remedy and was burnt in homes during outbreaks of disease.

Main Constituents

  • MonoterpenesSuch as alpha-pinene, sabinene, myrcene and limonene, which give juniper its fresh, piney aroma.
  • Terpinen-4-olAn aromatic compound also found in tea tree oil.
  • Flavonoids and TanninsContribute to the extract's antioxidant profile and slightly astringent taste.
  • Natural Sugars and ResinsPresent in the fleshy part of the cone.

Applications of Juniper Berry Extract

  • Flavouring for gin-style spirits, botanical tonics and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Sauces, marinades and game-meat seasonings
  • Herbal teas and digestive blends
  • Urinary and water-balance supplements, following traditional use
  • Detox and cleansing formulations
  • Skin-care toners and clarifying creams
  • Men's grooming products and natural fragrances
  • Massage balms and body oils

In European herbal tradition, juniper was used mainly for digestion and as a diuretic. Finished supplements must follow local regulations for permitted claims and dose.

Specifications and Storage

Juniper Berry Extract is available as a brown powder in ratio grades such as 4:1 or 10:1, as a liquid extract, or as a flavour extract for beverage use. We test each batch for moisture, heavy metals and microbial load, and share a certificate of analysis. The aroma compounds are volatile, so the extract should be kept in tightly closed containers in a cool place, away from heat and light.

Safety Notes

Juniper is not recommended during pregnancy, and long-term or high-dose use is generally advised against in herbal references, particularly for people with kidney problems. Labels should include suitable caution statements for the target market.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Ask for the solvent used on the COA.
