The Tree "Without Sorrow"

In Sanskrit, Ashoka means "without sorrow". The tree is sacred in Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Buddhist texts say the Buddha was born under an Ashoka tree in Lumbini, and in the Ramayana, Sita was held in an Ashoka grove in Lanka. The tree has dense, dark green leaves and bright orange-red flower clusters that bloom in spring.

Saraca asoca grows naturally in the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas and parts of central India. Heavy demand for its bark, combined with slow growth, has made it a vulnerable species in the wild, so responsible sourcing is important.

Beware the "False Ashoka"

The tall, narrow tree planted along Indian roads and in gardens is usually Polyalthia longifolia, often called the false ashoka or mast tree. It is a completely different plant with no place in Ayurvedic Ashoka formulations. Unfortunately, its bark is sometimes sold as Ashoka bark. Correct identification is one of the most important quality checks for this product.
