Sunflower Oil is pressed from the seeds of Helianthus annuus, the tall, bright yellow sunflower. It is one of the most widely used vegetable oils in the world, both in kitchens and in cosmetics, where its light texture, mild scent and natural vitamin E make it a versatile carrier oil.
Arizone International supplies Sunflower Oil in refined and cold-pressed grades, including high-linoleic and high-oleic types, for food companies, cosmetic manufacturers, soap makers, wholesalers and private label businesses.
From the Americas to the World
Sunflowers were first domesticated by Native American peoples thousands of years ago. They reached Europe in the sixteenth century as ornamental plants, and Russian farmers later turned them into a major oil crop. Today, Ukraine and Russia are the world's largest producers of sunflower oil. In India, sunflower is grown mainly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, and refined sunflower oil is one of the most common cooking oils in Indian kitchens.
Young sunflower heads follow the sun across the sky during the day, a behaviour called heliotropism, which gave the plant its name.
Types of Sunflower Oil
- High-Linoleic (Classic) Sunflower OilAbout 60% to 70% linoleic acid, light and widely used in cooking and cosmetics.
- Mid-Oleic Sunflower OilA balance of oleic and linoleic acids, used in snack frying.
- High-Oleic Sunflower OilAround 80% or more oleic acid, very stable and popular in long-life cosmetics and high-heat cooking.
All types are naturally rich in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), especially cold-pressed oil.
Sunflower Oil in Skin Care
Sunflower oil's high linoleic acid content supports the skin's natural barrier, and it is often used in baby oils, facial oils and moisturisers for dry skin. Studies in South Asia, including India and Bangladesh, have looked at gentle sunflower oil massage for newborn skin, which has made it a respected ingredient in baby care. It is also a common base for herbal infused oils and soaps.
