Sesame Oil is pressed from the seeds of Sesamum indicum, one of the oldest oilseed crops in the world. Known in India as til ka tel, and as gingelly oil or nallennai in the south, it is a cooking oil, a traditional massage oil and the most important base oil in Ayurveda.
Arizone International supplies Sesame Oil in cold-pressed, refined and toasted grades for food companies, Ayurvedic manufacturers, cosmetic brands, wholesalers and private label businesses.
The Queen of Oilseeds
Sesame has been grown in India for thousands of years, and charred sesame seeds have been found at Harappan sites. The famous phrase "Open Sesame" comes from the way ripe sesame pods burst open to release their seeds. India is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of sesame seed, with Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu among the main growing states.
In Ayurveda, sesame oil is called tila taila and is the classic base for medicated oils, such as Mahanarayan Taila and Ksheerabala Taila, in which herbs are slowly cooked. It is used in abhyanga (daily oil massage) and in gandusha, the practice of swishing oil in the mouth now widely known as oil pulling.
Three Main Types
- Cold-Pressed (Virgin) Sesame OilLight golden, with a mild nutty taste. Used for cooking, massage and Ayurvedic preparations.
- Refined Sesame OilPale and neutral, suited to cosmetics and pharmaceutical use.
- Toasted Sesame OilMade from roasted seeds, dark brown with a strong aroma. Used in small amounts as a flavouring in Chinese, Japanese and Korean cooking.
Why Sesame Oil Keeps So Well
Sesame oil is roughly balanced between oleic and linoleic acid, yet it resists rancidity better than many similar oils. The reason is its natural lignans, especially sesamin, sesamolin and sesamol, together with tocopherols. These act as built-in antioxidants and give the oil a long shelf life.

Allergy Note
Sesame is a recognised food allergen in many countries, including the EU, the UK, Canada and, since 2023, the United States. Products containing sesame oil need proper allergen labelling in these markets.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For Ayurvedic massage and herbal oils, use cold-pressed sesame oil; some formulas also call for "cured" sesame oil, which is gently heated before use. Toasted sesame oil is for flavour only and should not be used on the skin.
