Safflower Oil is a light, clear oil pressed from the seeds of Carthamus tinctorius, a thistle-like plant with bright orange-yellow flowers known in India as kusum or kardi. It is valued as a light cooking oil and as a non-greasy carrier oil in cosmetics and massage products.

Arizone International supplies Safflower Oil in high-linoleic and high-oleic grades, cold-pressed or refined, for food companies, cosmetic brands, wholesalers and private label businesses.

An Ancient Dye Plant

Safflower is one of humanity's oldest crops. Its flowers were used to make red and yellow dyes for textiles, and safflower garlands have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The dried petals are sometimes sold as "false saffron" or used to adulterate real saffron, because they give a similar colour at a fraction of the price. In India, safflower has traditionally been grown as a winter crop in the drylands of Maharashtra and Karnataka, where its deep roots help it cope with little rain.

Two Types of Safflower Oil

Safflower varieties are bred to give two quite different oils:

  • High-Linoleic Safflower OilContains around 70% to 80% linoleic acid, one of the highest levels of any oil. It feels very light on the skin and is popular in cosmetics, but it is less stable to heat.
  • High-Oleic Safflower OilContains around 70% to 80% oleic acid. It is much more stable, has a long shelf life and a high smoke point, and suits frying and long-life cosmetic products.

Applications

  • Facial oils, lotions and creams for a light, non-greasy feel
  • Massage and aromatherapy carrier oil
  • Hair oils and conditioners
  • Lip balms and body oils
  • Cooking, frying and salad oil (food grade)
  • Margarine, mayonnaise and food processing
  • Private label cosmetic and edible oil ranges

High-linoleic safflower oil is often chosen for skin care because linoleic acid is a key component of the skin's natural barrier lipids. High-oleic oil is preferred where stability is more important.

Processing Options

Cold-pressed safflower oil keeps its natural colour and mild flavour, while refined oil is almost colourless and odourless, making it ideal for cosmetics that need a neutral base. We can advise on the right type for your formulation.

Quality Parameters

  • Fatty acid profile by gas chromatography, confirming the oil type
  • Acid value, peroxide value and moisture
  • Iodine value, saponification value and refractive index
  • Colour, odour and clarity
  • Heavy metals and residual solvents for refined grades

Storage

Store in closed containers in a cool, dark place. High-linoleic oil should be used within its shelf life and protected from air and light; adding vitamin E helps stability in finished products.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Choose high-oleic safflower oil for cooking and for cosmetics that need a long shelf life, and high-linoleic oil for light, fast-absorbing skin care. The fatty acid profile on the COA confirms which type you are buying.
