Marula Oil is a light, pale-yellow oil pressed from the kernels of the marula fruit, Sclerocarya birrea, a tree that grows across southern Africa. It has become a premium ingredient in facial oils and hair care, valued for its silky feel and its natural resistance to rancidity.

Arizone International supplies Marula Oil for cosmetic manufacturing, private label beauty ranges, wholesale and bulk orders, with processing, packaging and quantities set to your needs.

What Is Marula Oil?

The marula tree is common in the savannahs of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and neighbouring countries. Its plum-sized fruits fall to the ground when ripe and are collected, often by women in rural communities, who crack the hard stones by hand to remove the small kernels. The kernels are then pressed to produce the oil.

Marula oil is rich in oleic acid, usually around 70% to 78%, with smaller amounts of palmitic, stearic and linoleic acids. This high monounsaturated content gives it a rich but non-greasy feel and makes it more stable than oils rich in polyunsaturated fats. It also contains natural antioxidants such as tocopherols.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Ask for the country of origin and the fatty acid profile, as marula oil is costly and can be blended with cheaper high-oleic oils. If your brand makes ethical or fair-trade claims, request the relevant certificates from the start, as these depend on the specific supply chain.

Marula oil blends well with jojoba, argan and rosehip oil in facial blends, and a 10% to 30% share is common in finished facial oils. For hair products, it works well with coconut or argan oil. Store drums sealed and away from heat, and use opened containers within a few months for the best smell and colour.
