Vitamin A Tablet

Vitamin A Tablets are supplements that provide preformed vitamin A, usually as retinyl acetate or retinyl palmitate. Vitamin A contributes to normal vision, normal skin and mucous membranes, normal iron metabolism and normal immune function. It is essential for seeing in dim light.

Vitamin A and Night Vision

Vitamin A is needed to make rhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment in the retina that lets us see in low light. One of the first signs of deficiency is night blindness. More severe deficiency damages the surface of the eye and can lead to permanent blindness, especially in young children. Deficiency also weakens the immune system and increases the risk of serious infections such as measles.

Vitamin A deficiency has been a major public health issue in many developing countries, including India. The national vitamin A prophylaxis programme gives regular high-dose vitamin A to young children, and it has helped reduce childhood blindness.

Formulation Notes

Vitamin A is labelled in micrograms of retinol activity equivalents (mcg RAE) or in international units (IU), depending on the market. Adult nutritional doses are typically around 600 mcg to 900 mcg RAE. Vitamin A is sensitive to light, heat, oxygen and moisture, so we use stabilised beadlets or dry powders and plan appropriate overages based on stability data. Content uniformity testing is essential.

Important Safety Notes

Vitamin A is fat-soluble and is stored in the liver, so excess can build up and become toxic. High doses taken during pregnancy can cause birth defects, and pregnant women and those planning pregnancy should not take vitamin A supplements above recommended levels without medical advice. Long-term high intake may also affect bone health and the liver. Upper limits apply in most regions, commonly 3,000 mcg RAE per day for adults. People with liver disease or those taking retinoid medicines for acne or psoriasis should not use vitamin A supplements without a doctor's advice.
